Description

Albino Black Diamond Stingray — Potamotrygon leopoldi

Rare contrast. Ultimate freshwater royalty.

The Albino Black Diamond Stingray is one of the rarest and most visually striking freshwater rays in the world. This morph takes the iconic Black Diamond pattern — normally bold white spotting over a jet-black disc — and transforms it into a luminous albino masterpiece. The deep black base is replaced with creamy ivory to golden tones, while the contrasting pattern glows in high definition across the entire disc. Under proper lighting, the ray appears almost illuminated from within.

Native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil, Potamotrygon leopoldi is known for its symmetrical spotting and refined disc shape. The albino variation elevates this already elite species into true collector status. As it glides across the substrate, the flowing movement of its disc and tail creates an effortless, hypnotic display.

Reaching 18–24+ inches disc diameter (larger with proper care), this is a high-end, advanced-level species suited for serious aquarists with large systems and stable conditions.

Aquarium Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons for a single adult (500+ gallons recommended long-term)

  • Footprint: Wide tank with 6–8 ft length minimum

  • Substrate: Fine sand (essential)

  • Flow: Moderate

  • Décor: Minimal sharp décor; open sand areas

  • Lighting: Moderate (enhances golden albino contrast)

  • Filtration: Oversized biological filtration required (heavy waste producer)

  • Lid: Secure cover recommended

Tank Mates

Best with large, calm, compatible species:

  • Arowana

  • Datnoids

  • Large peaceful cichlids

  • Giant gouramis

  • Large catfish

Avoid aggressive fish that may nip the disc and avoid small fish that may become food.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 80–86°F (27–30°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.2

  • Hardness: Soft to medium

  • Water Quality: Extremely clean and stable; sensitive to ammonia/nitrite

  • Oxygen: Moderate to high dissolved oxygen preferred

Diet

Carnivorous:

  • Fresh shrimp and prawn

  • Fish fillet

  • Earthworms

  • High-quality sinking carnivore pellets

This is a leucistic color morph, more commonly known as platinum. The banded archerfish is one of seven archerfish species. This species usually inhabits tropical coastal brackish waters. They capture their prey from the surface of the water or outside the water column and they do so in a unique way. They “spit” a jet of water to shoot down an insect or other morsel. They can even target prey resting on low overhanging mangrove branches when they cannot find food on the surface of the water.
