This is a leucistic color morph, more commonly known as platinum. The banded archerfish is one of seven archerfish species. This species usually inhabits tropical coastal brackish waters. They capture their prey from the surface of the water or outside the water column and they do so in a unique way. They “spit” a jet of water to shoot down an insect or other morsel. They can even target prey resting on low overhanging mangrove branches when they cannot find food on the surface of the water.

Description

Flash Zebra Catfish (Leiarius sp. “Flash Zebra”)

The Flash Zebra Catfish is a rare and visually striking hybrid/variant prized for its bold, high-contrast striping and sleek, fast-swimming body. Combining the power and presence of large South American catfish with unique “zebra-like” patterning, this species stands out as a true showpiece in monster fish aquariums. Active, predatory, and fast-growing, the Flash Zebra is best kept by experienced hobbyists with large systems.

Diet

Flash Zebra Catfish are carnivorous and aggressive feeders:

  • Sinking carnivore pellets (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods (shrimp, fish, krill)
  • Fresh cut fish or market shrimp
  • Occasional live foods (use sparingly)

They have a strong feeding response and should not be overfed.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180–300 gallons (juveniles), larger for adults
  • Water Type: Freshwater
  • Temperature: 74–82°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Setup: Open swimming space with minimal décor; driftwood optional; strong filtration required

This is a very active swimmer that needs room to move.

Size

  • Current Sale Size: Typically 4–9 inches

Max Size

  • Maximum Adult Size: 24–36 inches

Tank Mates

Due to their speed and predatory nature, tank mates must be chosen carefully:

  • Compatible: Large, fast, and aggressive species such as datnoids, arowanas, pacu, stingrays, and large cichlids
  • Use caution: Even sizable fish may be eaten if they can fit in the mouth
  • Avoid: Small or slow-moving fish

Temperament

Active, predatory, and fast-moving. Not overly aggressive, but extremely opportunistic and powerful.
